Remote Hearings

File & Register for a Remote Appearance

Parties are required to file a request and notice opposing parties for select case types. 

  1. Review the procedures for a remote appearance for your type of case type and hearing.
  2. File the required requests and notices with the court and opposing parties.
  3. Register for your remote appearance at least four hours prior to your hearing time. You will receive an emailed link to connect to the hearing.

State and Local Court Rules Prohibit Recording of Court Proceedings Without a Court Order.

Select your case type to review the notice and request requirements before you register using the Remote Court Scheduler.

If you register and appear remotely without submitting the required paperwork, the court may continue your hearing or order you to appear in person. 

Remote Appearance Process

Follow these steps for a successful remote appearance.

Before the Hearing

  • Complete and file the required paperwork based on your case and hearing type. Please pay attention to submission deadlines.
  • Register for your remote appearance through the court's Remote Court Scheduler:
    • You will need to register for an account with your email.
    • Search for your case number.
    • Select your name from the list of parties.
    • Select the hearings you will appear remotely for. 
    • Proceed through confirmation. 
    • You will receive a remote appearance link via email right away.

If you do not see the link in your email, please contact the CourtCall support line.

NOTE: Registration closes four hours before the hearing time.

Day of the Hearing

  • Click the link in your email to join the remote hearing.
  • Place your device on a stable surface.
    • Try to refrain from touching the device once connected to the meeting to eliminate scrape and muffle sounds. 
    • Ensure your video and audio are working properly and that your device is plugged in or fully charged.
  • Dress appropriately as you would for an in-person court appearance.
  • You must be in a private, quiet location without disruptions or distractions. You may not appear from a moving vehicle or from bed.
  • Join the hearing at least five minutes before your scheduled time. Please confirm that your name is correct.
  • You may be placed in a waiting room before being admitted.

During the Hearing

  • When the court is ready, you will be admitted into the hearing.
  • Your audio and video permissions will be turned off until your case is called. The court will then unmute your audio and video when your case is called. 
  • Look directly at the camera while speaking to ensure your voice is being picked up by the microphone. 
  • You may not record or broadcast except if in compliance with California Rules of Court, rule 1.150.

Remote Appearance Requirements by Case Type

  1.  Find your case type below.
  2. Identify the type of hearing you want to appear remotely for in the left column.
  3. Look at the "Requirements" column for what documents you must file and serve.
  4. Confirm "Deadlines" for when to file and serve.

After filing and serving as required, make sure to register with the Remote Court Scheduler to receive your remote appearance link via email.

Criminal and Traffic

  • All other parties must notice by 2:00pm the court day before the hearing if appearing remotely.

Remote Access for Non-Parties

Judicial approval is required for a person to appear remotely if they are not a named party on the case. Prepare the request forms listed in the table below and submit your request  with the Clerk's office.

FAQ

Once you’ve signed up for a remote appearance, you will need ONE of the following:

  • A computer equipped with a microphone and camera (Apple or PC)
  • Tablet or mobile device (Apple or Android)

Make sure your device is plugged into a power source or fully charged and connected to a strong Wi-Fi network. 

Register to receive a remote appearance link using the court's Remote Court Scheduler at your earliest convenience. Registration closes four hours before the hearing time. 

You may need to file and notice other parties to appear remotely. The court's deadlines for filing and notice are available on this webpage under “Remote Appearance Requirements by Case Type."

You can rejoin the meeting by clicking the “Rejoin Your Meeting” button on the first screen you see after you drop out of the call.

Try to join the conference at least five minutes before your allotted start time. 

The link provided in your confirmation email will only work for the date and time listed. If your hearing is continued or has another hearing set, you will need to reschedule another remote appearance for the new hearing date.
