Divisions

  • Appeals

    The Appeals Division is responsible for the filing of all appeals in civil cases.

  • Civil

    Civil cases involve disputes between private parties rather than the violation of criminal law. 

  • Criminal & Misdemeanor

    Criminal Court hears cases ranging from minor offenses (misdemeanors) such as traffic infractions to serious ones like robbery and murder (felonies).

  • Family Law

    Family Law Courts have jurisdiction over all cases involving dissolution of marriage, legal separation, nullity, paternity, domestic violence, child custody, visitation and support. 

  • Grand Jury

    Grand juries are an integral part of our system of law dating back to the Assize of Clarendon of 1166 and the Magna Carta of 1215.

  • Jury Service

    A Jury is a selected group of citizens which hears the testimonies in a legal dispute and determines what they believe is the truth.

  • Juvenile

    Juvenile court handles three types of cases: Juvenile Delinquency, Juvenile Status Offenses and Juvenile Dependency. 

  • Probate

    Probate is the court procedure that transfers the legal ownership of people's property after they die. 

  • Small Claims

    Small Claims is a court where you can exercise your rights to resolve a dispute for damages of $10,000 or less. 

  • Traffic & Infractions

    The Traffic Division handles all traffic tickets and infraction citations issued in Nevada County.
