Nevada County Superior Court introduces historic courthouse tours in partnership with Nevada County Historical Society

The Nevada County Superior Court is pleased to announce the start of Historic Courthouse Tours in partnership with the Nevada County Historical Society (NCHS). The first free tour is fully booked and will be held Friday June 27th for a group of participants registered with the Historical Society.

This civic engagement initiative will allow members of the public to visit the Historic Nevada City Courthouse to learn about some of the local history that has taken place in the courtrooms and halls of the building since the early days of Nevada County. Participants will learn about the architecture and prior uses of the building as well as some of the important figures that have shaped the Nevada County Superior Court, California, and even US, history. Knowledgeable volunteer guides from the Historical Society will share information and answer questions about the history of the Courthouse and community.

Judge Kelly Babineau, the judicial sponsor for this civics initiative, said “Civic engagement in our community is closely connected to an understanding of history. The court looks forward to welcoming tour participants to consider the history of the Courthouse and the impact many dedicated public servants have had in our community over the years. The partnership with the Nevada County Historical Society has made this unique civics initiative possible. Thank you to the volunteer guides, the Historic Society Board, Court Executive Officer Laila Waheed, and court staff for making these tours a reality.”

“The Nevada County Historical Society is excited to be a part of this service to the community and thanks the court for including us,” said Steve Fry, NCHS Board Member. “The Courthouse in its various forms has served this County continuously since the mid 1850's and has many stories to tell. This is a great opportunity for our community to hear some of those stories and walk the halls of what can only be described as one of the principal driving forces of this County from its beginning. We are confident that you will enjoy this tour and hope to see you in court.”

In partnership with the Nevada County Historical Society, tours are planned twice a month on the second and fourth Friday of the month. Those interested in signing up for a tour should contact the Historical Society at courthousetours@nevadacountyhistory.org. Tour participation is by advance sign up only. Spots are limited.
