Press Release
Law Day 2025
The Superior Court of Nevada County will host fifth grade students from Nevada County schools for Law Day on May 1st, 2025. The event will offer students an opportunity to visit the courthouse, participate in a mock trial and learn about how each party in the Justice System upholds the Constitution through their work.
In collaboration with the Nevada County Superintendent of Schools, the court will host over 400 students and teachers at the Nevada City Courthouse. Sessions include a mock trial, a tour of the courthouse and an opportunity to meet Law Enforcement K9s.
May 1st is National Law Day and, in alignment with the American Bar Association, the theme for the Court's Law Day is "The Constitution's Promise: Out of Many, One." Students will gain an understanding of the Constitution and the role of the Court within the three branches of government.
Presiding Judge S. Robert Tice-Raskin said “Our courts have a critical role in our community and nation - ensuring that all individuals have access to a justice system to fairly and impartially resolve their disputes according to the rule of law. We are extraordinarily pleased to host our community’s fifth graders and help them learn more about our courts and their important role in our democracy.”
"Law Day is a long-standing tradition that fell by the wayside after the pandemic," said Laila Waheed, Court Executive Officer. "We are looking forward to reviving and reimagining this civics event for fifth graders this year and for years to come. The support of the Superintendent's office, County partners and local law enforcement to host this event for students is wonderful to see."
Scott W. Lay, the Nevada County Superintendent of Schools, said "I'm very excited to be partnering with the Superior Court to bring Law Day back for our students. This is an invaluable program that gives our students an opportunity to see how the court system works within our local government."
Civics education is an important part of the Court's community outreach programs, which includes the Judges in the Classroom program in addition to Law Day. More information about the Court's outreach programs can be found on the Court's website under Public Affairs.
